The Art of Lance Stirling

The Paintings in St Stephen’s were painted by Lance Stirling, a member of St Stephen’s Church for more than 30 years.
In relation to his art, he says: “I am fortunate to be able to create paintings based on a subject to which I am completely committed and to know they will have a home where, hopefully they will be appreciated.

He gave up his spirit – John 19:30


Acrylic on board 170 x 145 cm. A depiction of the instant of the the death of Jesus when he bowed his head and gave up his Spirit to his Father in heaven.

‘He Blessed Them’ – Luke 24:50


Oil on Canvas 170 x 141 cm. On the third day after the crucifixion Jesus stood among them. He led them to Bethany and, lifting his hands, he blessed them.

About the Artist:
Lance studied Graphic Design at RMIT/Painting at National Gallery of Victoria.
Winner of Australian Youth Art prize before ceasing painting in order to pursue a career in Graphic Design.
Art director of several Melbourne and Sydney Advertising Agencies.
Designer of three Australian stamps.
Included in International Who’s Who in Graphic Art – Zurich 1962
Lecturer in Graphic Design RMIT (Melb).
Senior Lecturer RCAE (NSW)
Inducted into ‘Hall of Fame.
Australian Graphic Design Association 1998
Resumed painting in retirement and, despite a great interest in contemporary expression, chooses a realist approach to Christian subjects (for purposes of clear communication).
Member of Hawthorn Artists Society.
